Get ready for your designer dog

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

If you want a dog with specific looks, coat, colour, size and behavioural traits, then science and breeding could design one for you.

Such characteristics can spell the difference between a dog becoming a much loved and pampered pet, or a mistreated and neglected animal.

Monash University researcher Pauleen Bennett said “for many people the dog is the only living animal with which they have any form of regular personal contact and of course, many pet dogs are treated like royalty.

“Yet, animal welfare shelters are forced to put to death thousands of unwanted dogs each year, and many pets are still subject to cruelty, neglect or inappropriate care.

“Even the most well-intentioned owner can place their dog’s wellbeing at risk through exposure to the stresses of high density living, anxiety triggered by long hours spent alone, and even obesity or diabetes caused by overfeeding.”

Characteristics people want in their pet dogs include being friendly, obedient, affectionate and healthy, while undesirable behaviours included nervousness, destructiveness and excitability.

“Canine behavioural traits are highly heritable, so in theory at least, we can genetically fix desirable characteristics in dog breeds. Just as we have previously produced dogs able to herd sheep or pull sleds, so we should be able to breed dogs better suited to their role as companions,” Bennett said.

“Successfully matching the dog, its requirements and behavioural traits with the understanding and desires of the owner should mean the animals are more likely to enjoy good welfare throughout long, healthy and happy lives.”

“The whole issue of animal welfare is gaining momentum socially and Australia is well-placed to lead the world in developing socially responsible relationships with animals,” Bennett said.

New Baby Chick,Help!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I just got a new baby chick and I don’t know what breed he is. He is a dark shade of yellow and black horizontal stripes down his back. I just wanna know what breed he is,we don’t live on a farm, and have a decent home made for him. Food, water, and a decent shelter is that enough. It would be bad for us to fail, and it die,I’m already getting attached to it, so if your know please help.I wanna keep it alive!

You’ll need to keep it warm, too. But not too warm; I once had like 20 chickens die because we left them outside on an EXTREMELY hot summer day… ugh.

Get a light fitted into the shelter and observe how the chickens react; if they seem comfortable, the temperature is right, if they stay away from the lightbulb it’s too hot, if they struggle to crowd around the light it’s too cold.

—–

If you care about this animal, why didn’t you do your research before you brought him home, to make sure you had everything you needed to keep him alive? :( In addition to shelter he needs a heat lamp–a desk lamp will work temporarily but really he needs a heat lamp made for baby chicks. Baby chick down isn’t enough to keep the cold out, he needs a heat lamp to keep him warm until he gets his feathers in. Without it he could get sick and die of cold, no matter how insulated his shelter is.

There isn’t really any way to guess at his breed, especially just from a description: there are a lot of breeds that start off as yellow and black-striped. Ask the person you got him from; a feed store should be able to tell you exactly which breeds they have in, and which ones are yellow and black, and a farmer or hobbyist should be able to tell you the breed of the parents.

there are alot of different types of chickens that look like that when they are babies but always grow up to look different
u can tell if its a boy or girl by looking at the top of its beak if you see spiky things then its a male if you cant see anything its more probable to be a female…

make sure that you have water for it but not in a container that is too deep cuz it could drown, get special food for it in a store like the Tractors Supply (i hope they have one where you live, or any other store that has livestock food), it can be ground up corn (that you an do yourself by buying whole corn in a grocery store and grinding it) or special chick food for it (more reccomended for small chicks).
at night it can sleep with an old shirt or rag over it so that it can feel like its its mom, if i were you i would get a companion for it so that it can be more happy
when it gets older you can let it outside or inside (your choice) but they love to eat grass and will probably eat all of yours

if you need more help or advice about it add me or email me i have many chickens and can help in almost anything about them! :]

A betta question?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

on top of the water of my betta’s tank there is a little pool of bubbles what does it mean

Thats called a bubble nest. Male bettas will build them out of boredom or it can be a sign of a healthy and happy betta. He could also be attempting to woo the ladies.
Did you just change the water? New tank? Bettas will build them if there is a change in water as well. ;)

——–

Not only is he happy, he is creating conditions for mating and nesting! The bubbles that he is making is for the possible eggs that a female Betta would supply.

The following is from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betta_fish

“Betta males build bubble nests of various sizes and thicknesses at the surface of the water. During and after spawning, the male uses his mouth to retrieve sinking eggs and deposit them in the bubble nest. After approximately two days the eggs hatch, and after three more they become free-swimming fry; at this point the male is generally removed from the breeding tank to prevent cannibalism and stress to the young. Betta fry are fed infusoria for the first several days, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp or similarly sized food.”

My cat got hit by a car and i cant find a vet open on a sunday?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

his leg is huge and is bleeding i think it is broken badly can someome give me advice on what should i do

you have to phone nearby vets and find one with a 24 hour service-most vets have one. if you leave it your cat could bleed to death, and will be in a lot of pain. it could also have internal injuries that you cant see .

——

Do you have an emergency clinic in your area. Go to Google.com/maps, zoom in on your greater area and punch in “Animal Emergency”. I’m sorry I can’t help with the medical part but I know we have a clinic in our area and it’s open 24 hours.

Edit: Aah yes, I didn’t think, but your vet’s office should have a recording that tells you where to go in case of an emergency! Call!

—-

That sounds like an emergency. Have you called the vets, they might have an emergency number for things like this that shouldn’t wait. In the meantime, try and make sure he’s comfortable and doesn’t move to much. Also, if you have humane societies near by, give them a call and see if they can provide you with some help.

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?

What can I do for my local SPCA?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

You can organize a pet food drive (ask what kind they feed before doing this, and specifically request that kind).

You can offer to sponsor an animal by donating a small amount of money each month.

Spread the word about adoption vs. buying from breeders.

Raffle off something pet-related and donate the proceeds to them.

Ask everyone you know for “Christmas presents” for the shelter.

Encourage people to donate, perhaps instead of buying you one present they intended to, they could donate the cost to the shelter.

Visit the director and offer to help with paperwork, adoption screenings, addressing envelopes, or whatever else needs to be done.

Report animal cruelty and neglect immediately instead of letting the problem worsen, and encourage others to do the same.

Ask what supplies they need and then get together with your class or coworkers to send a box full of their preferred type of toys/food dishes/etc.

Get together a group to bring the office workers hot chocolate and sing them carols during a lull between visitors. Hand out Christmas cards with animal pictures that say something like ‘You’re the real Santa Paws’, etc.

Adopt a pet if you can.
