Film-makers condemn omission of Hussain’s film from IFFI

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Filmmakers participating in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here have condemned the omission of renowned painter M F Hussain’s documentary from the screening schedule following an objection by Hindu right wing organisations. The 40-year old documentary, ‘Through the Eyes of a Painter’, about Hussain’s experience in Rajasthan, was part of Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s Films Division’s ‘Framing Time section’, scheduled to be screened today.

Hindu organisations ‘Sanatan Sanstha’ and ‘Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’ (HJS) had objected to the screening of the documentary, by the 1915 born painter, stating that there were several cases pending against him in India. “This is ridiculous.

Just because some people have problems with a filmmaker, it (the documentary) cannot be treated like this,” veteran filmmaker Jahnu Barua said. Alleging that the move to omit the documentary was against the freedom of expression, Barua said he had seen the film six times and had found nothing objectionable in it.

“An artist should not suffer because of politics,” Dadasaheb Phalke award winning filmmaker, Adoor Gopalkrishnan said adding that the film should be shown by all means. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry had decided to defer the screening of the documentary last night.

“The screening of the documentary has been deferred. It may be shown some other time,” Director of film festival, S M Khan said today.

HJS functionaries had written to Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and the DFF, on the first day of the festival, to withdraw the documentary. The members had also met Kamat with a memorandum

It’s splitsville for Geri Halliwell, Ivan ‘Flipz’ Levez?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Popstar Geri Halliwell has ended her whirlwind romance with Ivan ‘Flipz’ Levez, it has emerged.

Apparently, the ‘Wannabe’ hitmaker could not deal with distance between them, though they had a bright future ahead.

The 36-year-old had been dating the Los Angeles-based dancer, 29, since April this year (08) but is now rumoured to have called time on the romance.

“She called Flipz when she returned to the U.K. from L.A. and confessed that things just weren’t working for her,” Contactmusic quoted a pal, as telling Closer magazine.

“Geri said she’d hoped it would be an amazing love-of-her-life romance, but that the spark just wasn’t there. She couldn’t deal with the distance between them and thought it was best to end it before he got even more hurt,” the pal added.

Though Flipz believed the two had a bright future together, Halliwell reportedly was not of the same view anymore.

“As far as Flipz was concerned they were strong together and had a bright future. They’d talked about kids and marriage. But I guess in her eyes, it just wasn’t meant to be,” the pal said.

Halliwell has earlier been linked to pop star Robbie Williams and scriptwriter Sacha Gervasi, who fathered the singer’s two-year-old daughter, Bluebell.

Aamir returns to blog with scratchy ant story

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan who has been missing from cyber space for over two months, has posted on his blog his strange encounter with a colony of ants that bit him en mass while he was sleeping.

“After a long day at work, I went to bed at around 3 a.m. A couple of hours later, deep in sleep I had this vague feeling of being bitten on my ear. Gradually I was being bitten on my stomach, legs, neck. I was so sleepy that I just kept cursing, scratching, turning and tossing. Finally it got really unbearable, and I kind of woke up to see my bed filled with ants,” Aamir wrote on his blog www.aamirkhan.com Friday.

“There were hundreds of them! Crawling all over and giving me hell. I had to jump under the shower and then went and crashed on my couch,” he added.

Considering that ants swarm around anything that has some sugar level as they feed on it, the actor joked: “I guess they found something really sweet on that bed, and since K (wife Kiran) was out on a night shoot I am assuming it was me.”

Aamir also apologised for his uninformed absence from writing regularly on his blog.

“I suppose you all want to know why I have been away so long. Well I’m not sure I can explain. I guess I needed to be by myself for a while. Still, I should have expressed that. My apologies,” the actor wrote.
