Renting textbooks is a way to save money

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

With the prices of everything going up, a student pays hundreds of dollars on textbooks these days, apart from the college tuition fees and many other miscellaneous fees; education has become very costly. A traditional way to save money on books was to borrow textbooks from senior students or from the college bookstore. Now there is an option of online textbook rentals. This can make college education less expensive as it saves the cost of books. A student goes to the web and searches for textbooks of his choice and can rent textbooks for the period he chooses.

The text book rentals turn out to be lesser than buying a new or used textbook, you save at least half the cost. Most of these rental sites offer four, five flexible rental periods to choose from. The students have the buyout option, which means he can choose to buy the textbook at anytime during the rental period, if the student does not feel like giving it up. After the rental period is over, the textbook is shipped back to the rental company free return postage. This method is environmental friendly also and you save on a lot of paper as you are recycling books.

Party Stationery

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I had no idea that there was such lovely stationery available for parties, until I was shopping recently for some place card holders. In the past, I found it quite difficult to find things like this, that suited my taste and that were reasonably priced. It seems that there must be a much bigger demand for this sort of thing lately as there is such a fantastic range of things. I was almost annoyed at the range as it took me so long to choose what I wanted, but it was great to have so many beautiful things there.

I was also looking for a nice favor and I managed to find something to match which was really great. It is lovely to be able to throw a nice party and have all of these lovely things to be able to put on the table for my guests to enjoy. I was really impressed with the range of favors, there were not only wedding ones but ones for all types of party even baby shower favors. I just have to organise a bouquet of flowers to go in the middle of my table and all of party arrangements will be ready. I cannot wait!

Texas child welfare agency clears Katrina survivor

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The state’s child welfare agency has cleared a Hurricane Katrina survivor of allegations she abused her five children, who were allegedly kidnapped by their caretaker last month.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olgiun told the Houston Chronicle in its online edition Thursday that no abuse or wrongdoing was found in its investigation of Erica Alphonse, 24. She said the family “has the right to go on with their everyday lives.”

Rhonda Tavey, a former Red Cross volunteer, had befriended Alphonse and her family, who were among the thousands who fled to the Houston area after Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005. Tavey agreed to take care of Alphonse’s five children while Alphonse sought to rebuild her life.

In July, however, Tavey refused to return the three girls and two boys, ages 3 to 8, and took them to the Dallas area, claiming Alphonse was abusive.

After being on the run for nearly a month, she was arrested last week and charged with five counts of kidnapping.

Alphonse said she was pleased with the outcome of the investigation, but Tavey’s attorney Dick DeGuerin said it did not go far enough.

Harris County prosecutors have also said they found no evidence to support Tavey’s claims of abuse.

On Monday, Tavey had gone to a Houston court and filed paperwork saying she should get custody of the because of alleged physical abuse, family violence, drug abuse and child neglect by their mother.

What can you do with a major in Anthropology and minor in Philosophy?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Teach culture studies, or sociology. Specialize not in the “what happened,” but “why it happened.”

——

  1. Stand in the unemployment line.
    2. If you are interested in physical anthropology you could try to go to medical or nursing school.
    3. If you are interested in cultural anthropology you could work in marketing or human resources.

Remember, almost any bachelor degree won’t get you a job specific to your major, unless it is in certain hard sciences or engineering.

Value of IT Training

Friday, July 25th, 2008

The world is becoming more dependent on technology as time goes on. This means that the people who know how to use that technology will only gain value in the future. This is especially true for anyone watching the current situation in foreign IT industries. Offshore support is becoming more costly for companies and many are now returning to local support. Now is the perfect time for anyone who wants to receive IT training to add a valuable career skill to their repertoire.

It isn’t as difficult as you may think though. It is quite possible for you to take several new alternatives to receive your education in this field, possibly alongside your current work or education commitments. There are several reputable methods for IT online training. These can take two separate formats.

The first is just a standard online class format. These can utilize simple instruction or even group chats to discuss the material and improve skills. The other option is IT CBT training. This functions as a program within a training program. It is a perfect option for those who want a self-paced option with room for interactive training. It is basically just one specialized program that contains versions of other popular applications inside. You can follow the instructions and complete tests within the training program, meaning that you will have hands-on training from the very start. There won’t be much in the way of abstract concepts, just concrete learning through guided tips.

If you are interested in joining the IT workforce, these programs should offer some good options.

Textbook Rentals is a Good way to Save the Environment

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Students pay for many different kinds of fees each year—there are tuition fees; laboratory fees; miscellaneous fees; and, of course, the fees for textbooks. Students spend hundreds of dollars annually to pay for this specific need. For practicality’s sake, some great minds have come up with a solution to the ever-increasing prices of new textbooks—textbook rentals.

Students do not only get the chance to sell their used textbooks and gain back some money but they could also help other students who would need the exact same textbooks but at a lower price. And since the rent a textbook idea gives way to recycling, it also saves many trees from being taken down each year. Renting a book would mean lesser waste (with 40% of landfills comprising of paper wastes). So this idea does not only save money but also a lot of forests from being denuded!

A good way to rent textbook is to go online. There are many online shops that now offer used books (and occasionally some new ones) at a much lower price. Students have the option to have the books shipped (where they would get the physical book) or they could just download the e-book version. Again, once a textbook is downloaded, hundreds of pages are saved and fewer trees are killed. So this school year, choose the better alternative—rent your textbooks and help save the environment.

Anyone in medical school?

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

How long does it take to become an orthopedic surgeon?

The overall path is:

4 years of high school
4 years of college
4 years of medical school
5 years of residency training (1 general surgery, 4 orthopedics)

Upon completing residency (and passing all relevant board/licensing exams) you will be able to practice without restriction as an orthopedic surgeon.

In terms of having a family, if kids are a priority, you’ll make the time for them. It’s also all relative….will you spend less time with them than if you were a homemaker? Of course. Would you spend less time with them than if you were a lawyer? Maybe yes, maybe no
