Classic vs. modern design

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Most homes today, which are getting rid of old TV sets, are opting for LCD TVs. Its sleek style occupies very less storage space. There is an option of mounting it on the wall but if you do not want to do any work on walls then you will have to buy a new TV stand because the old one will definitely not work with this new flat TV.

Glass and chrome is more popular choices for LCD TV stands these days but still the classic and timeless wood stands out. Wood looks more aesthetically appealing and blends well with old furniture. These days wooden TV stands come in modern designs to house a LCD TV. It is also a very durable material, which makes it a good choice for a TV stand. TV Stands made of glass can not be used for homes which have children.

There are ready to assemble kits also available in wood which also offer a cheap alternative. If you want to save money then you can look around for designs on net and retail shops and get a wooden TV stands made at home with a carpenter. This custom made TV stand will have shelves and partitions as per your requirements.

Garmin Products

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I have been trying to choose between all of the different garmin products to try to decide which aircraft satellite navigation system to buy. There are a few differences between them all including the price. I firstly liked the Garmin 496 but then when I started reading about all of the other types of garmin products I started to think that they were all good. It is a bit tricky though because I do have a budget but I also have certain requirements and I want good value for money. The Garmin 695 caught my attention as it fitted all of these requirements but then I looked at the Garmin 696 and realised that it had some functions which, although they were not on my requirements list, would be really useful to me. The problem is that it was just a bit dearer than my budget. I am in a bit of a dilemma now and I am taking a very long time making a decision because I know that once I make it, there is no changing my mind and this will be a purchase that I hope will last for a very long time so it needs to be right.

With new pacemaker, keep your mobile in your shirt pocket

Friday, February 13th, 2009

People with new MRI-safe pacemakers can keep any electro-magnetic device, including a mobile phone, in their shirt pockets, and can undergo Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans without worrying about magnetic reactions.

The new pacemaker has been developed by US-based Medtronic, one of world’s largest medical technology companies, and was made available in India from January.

“The SureScan is the first MRI-safe pacemaker. Now people, who have implanted these pacemakers, no longer need to take precautions during lightning and worry about mobile phones and high voltages,” Anil Mishra, consultant cardiologist of B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre here, said Thursday.

Besides, they will have no problems in undergoing MRI scans, he said, noting that older pacemakers, when brought under the strong magnetic field of the MRI, developed mechanical and electrical malfunctions that not only damaged the devices but also adversely affected the patients.

MRI is the one of the most effective diagnosis tool for any disorder of the brain, spine and spinal cord, and according to Mishra, many people have to undergo this diagnostic process sometime in their lives.

“Every year nearly a million pacemakers are implanted in patients across the world, out of which 50-75 percent need an MRI during the lifetime of their devices,” he said.

Mishra also said Kolkata is the first Indian city where a SureScan pacemaker has been implanted.

“We have successfully implanted this US’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved device in a 74-year-old man in Kolkata Jan 28. The man is recovering fast. I checked with all doctors and hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other Indian cities and found that we are the first Indian city to use this device,” he said.

The cardiologist said the implantation of the device requires no extra medical skills, but the pacemaker is more expensive.

“This device costs around Rs.250,000, which is about Rs 35,000 more than ordinary ones. But if we consider its advantages, then I am sure patients will prefer this device to ordinary ones,” Mishra said.

Special Functionalities - Trail camera & Digital rangefinder

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Trail cameras are popular for its much new functionality. One such feature is the time lapse function. In this we just need to place the camera in a position and program it to take pictures in some time intervals. This feature is widely used nowadays in many wild life channels which show various stages of growth of animals or even for plants. This feature is used based on the imagination of the user. The normal video where this technology is used is to capture a pupa becoming a butterfly. This shows the users talent and creative ability. Digital rangefinder cameras work on digital imaging technology. This technology was applied for range finder cameras in 2004. Epson RD1 is the first digital rangefinder camera, which is actually collaboration between Epson and Casino. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras have the same interchangeable lens used on their film or non digital counterparts. Most of the digital rangefinder cameras are expensive when compared to SLRS. There are some advantages and disadvantages of digital rangefinder cameras over SLR cameras. There is no moving mirror in the Digital rangefinder cameras so the momentary black out are avoided making it more prominent in the film industry.

Nokia sees cellphone, gear market falling in 2009

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Top handset maker Nokia Oyj said on Friday the world’s mobile phone market would fall in the fourth quarter and next year as an economic slowdown crimps consumer demand around the world.

It forecast 1.24 billion phones would be sold worldwide this year, down from a previous estimate of 1.26 billion, and said handset market volumes and the overall telecommunications equipment market was expected to fall next year.

“The warning dovetails well with Qualcomm and Intel — rapid recent deterioration of consumer electronics demand,” said analyst Tero Kuittinen at Global Crown Capital.

The worst financial crisis in 80 years has weakened economies around the world and official data on Friday showed the economy of the 15-nation euro zone shrank for the second quarter in a row.

“In the last few weeks, the global economic slowdown, combined with unprecedented currency volatility, has resulted in a sharp pull back in global consumer spending,” Nokia said in a statement.

The strengthening U.S. dollar and yen are pushing up component prices for handset manufacturers, while weakening currencies in emerging markets are hurting the purchasing power of consumers in Nokia’s key markets.

“Developed markets will fare worse and developing markets will fare better,” Nokia Chief Financial Officer Rick Simonson told an investor call.

Nokia said the increasingly limited availability of credit was also hurting, something analysts agreed with.

“We have been hearing about operators and distributors reducing their handset stock to an absolute minimum due to a credit shortage for the past few weeks,” said analyst Neil Mawston of Strategy Analytics.

Nokia shares fell more than 7 percent to 9.56 euros on Thursday, their lowest since August 2004, but later recovered and closed down 3.7 percent at 9.95 euros in Helsinki. In New York, Nokia’s ADRs closed 11.02 percent lower at $12.59.

Kulbinder Garcha, an analyst with CSFB, said companies heavily exposed to the North American and Western European markets — such as Motorola Inc and Sony Ericsson — faced tough times.

“The one segment of the market that will grow in 2009 is smartphones, so in the industry, Apple, HTC and RIM will outpace the others,” Garcha said.

BLACK CHRISTMAS

Nokia now expects fourth-quarter industry volumes to be around 330 million mobile devices, down from a year ago, and well below the 346 million average forecast in a Reuters poll earlier this month.

“As the dominant handset vendor, Nokia’s warning bodes poorly for the entire handset industry and the supply chain as a whole,” analyst Mark Sue from RBC Capital Markets, said in a research note.

Nokia’s forecasts sent wireless stocks lower in Europe and North America, with Alcatel-Lucent falling 3.4 percent, Motorola down 10.9 percent, RIM losing 8.5 percent and Apple off 6.4 percent.

Nokia expected its market share in the fourth quarter to be around 38 percent or slightly higher, but sales and profitability for key devices and services would be hurt. Reaching a 20 percent operating profit margin at the unit was not on the horizon and it would take decisive action to reduce its cost base significantly.

“You absolutely have to be brutal about prioritizing what you are going to continue to invest (at) the right pace and that means you have to cut some things off the bottom that would be nice to do, but they aren’t necessary to do. We are absolutely going through that process,” said Simonson.

Nokia’s network gear making venture, Nokia Siemens Networks, said earlier this week it would cut 1,820 jobs, most in Finland and Germany. Nokia said earlier this month it would cut some 600 jobs in marketing and research.

The Next Big Tech in HDTVs? Better Color

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

I’ve spent Tuesday at the DisplaySearch HDTV 2008 Conference, which focused on display sales and trends in the market. Some of it was fairly obvious: TV sales are growing at a good clip, flat panel TVs have now overtaken CRTs (and in the U.S., they’ve nearly displayed CRTs completely) and bigger displays are getting more popular.

But I was more interesting in where the market is going, and what’s left to be done. One topic that impressed me was the need for better color on our sets. Bob Scaglione of Sharp Electronics, gave a good summary of where LCDs seem to be going. He believes 50-in and up will be increasingly important, 1080p will be even more commonplace, and most big sets will move to 120Hz. All of that is happening today, of course, but will continue. After that, he said he expects the next big thing will be a move to a 10-bit color depth, theoretically allowing for up to 1 billion colors, instead of the 16.8 million today’s 8-bit color systems have. He talked about how RGB LED backlights would also for a larger color gamut.

This theme was expanded on by Michael Rudd of THX, who talked about the need for extended color gamut, which is the amount of the color space that a display can actually reproduce. He talked about how different kinds of displays have different color gamuts, with lasers providing the best color and RGB LEDs coming close. But because they are different technologies, they each display color differently. He talked about xvColor, a display independent color space, which may eventually become the way digital content identifies colors. This, he said, will show up first in games and PCs, but he hopes its use will grow over time.

Surround sound problems?

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

i baught a surround sound that doesnt have the remote and the bass is turned all the way down and i can only turn it up with the remote. its a koss if that helps

offhand i’d say that you’re going to have to order a replacement remote through koss. a lot of systems don’t allow full access to all functions without it.
