Men Must Contend With a Biological Clock, Too

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

It wasn’t all that long ago that any suggestion that a man had a “biological clock” like a woman, and should father children sooner rather than later, would have been given short scientific shrift.

Not anymore. Today, a growing body of evidence suggests that as men get older, fertility can and does decline, while the chances of fathering a child with serious birth defects and medical problems increase.

Some studies have linked higher rates of serious health problems such as autism and schizophrenia in children born to men as young as their mid-40s.

And doctors and researchers are busy trying to figure out how men who choose to delay fatherhood — either by choice or necessity, such as a lack of a partner — can offset the effects of their biological clocks as those clocks wind down.

Interestingly, problems with reduced fertility can start long before middle age, said Dr. Harry Fisch, one of the pioneers in the field in male fertility and director of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons‘ Male Reproductive Center, in New York City.

“We know after age 30, testosterone levels decline about 1 percent per year,” said Fisch, author of the book The Male Biological Clock.

Research done at the University of Washington has found that “as men age, DNA damage occurs to their sperm,” said Dr. Narendra P. Singh, a research associate professor in the department of bioengineering, who co-authored a study on the subject.

Several other studies point to problems in the offspring of older fathers, as well as older men experiencing fertility problems.

For instance, Fisch and his colleagues found that if a woman and a man were both older than age 35 at the time of conception, the father’s age played a significant role in the prevalence of Down syndrome. And this effect was most detectable if the woman was 40 or older — the incidence of Down syndrome was about 50 percent attributable to the sperm.

Other researchers have found that children born to fathers 45 or older are more likely to have poor social skills, and that children born to men 55 and older are more likely to have bipolar disorder than those born to men 20 to 24 years of age at the time of conception.

On other fronts, researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City found that children of men aged 40 or older were about six times more likely to have autism. Still another study found that the children of fathers who were 50 or older when they were born were almost three times more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Fisch is now focusing much of his attention on encouraging men to assess if their biological clock is ticking faster than it should. For instance, men who are overweight or obese tend to have more fertility problems than healthier men.

“It turns out that if you are too heavy, you have a lower sperm count,” he said, adding that excess body fat causes testosterone levels to decline. The good news: Losing weight helps them return to normal.

Singh advises older men who want to become fathers to pay attention to lifestyle issues and practice healthy habits that will, in turn, keep their sperm healthy. That particularly means no smoking and no overuse of alcohol, he said.

Both Fisch and Singh said they don’t think there’s a “cutoff” point for fatherhood. And they said it’s difficult to pinpoint the “ideal” age to father a child, especially since many couples today are marrying later and delaying starting a family.

But Fisch did say, “The sooner, the better.”

With new pacemaker, keep your mobile in your shirt pocket

Friday, February 13th, 2009

People with new MRI-safe pacemakers can keep any electro-magnetic device, including a mobile phone, in their shirt pockets, and can undergo Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans without worrying about magnetic reactions.

The new pacemaker has been developed by US-based Medtronic, one of world’s largest medical technology companies, and was made available in India from January.

“The SureScan is the first MRI-safe pacemaker. Now people, who have implanted these pacemakers, no longer need to take precautions during lightning and worry about mobile phones and high voltages,” Anil Mishra, consultant cardiologist of B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre here, said Thursday.

Besides, they will have no problems in undergoing MRI scans, he said, noting that older pacemakers, when brought under the strong magnetic field of the MRI, developed mechanical and electrical malfunctions that not only damaged the devices but also adversely affected the patients.

MRI is the one of the most effective diagnosis tool for any disorder of the brain, spine and spinal cord, and according to Mishra, many people have to undergo this diagnostic process sometime in their lives.

“Every year nearly a million pacemakers are implanted in patients across the world, out of which 50-75 percent need an MRI during the lifetime of their devices,” he said.

Mishra also said Kolkata is the first Indian city where a SureScan pacemaker has been implanted.

“We have successfully implanted this US’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved device in a 74-year-old man in Kolkata Jan 28. The man is recovering fast. I checked with all doctors and hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other Indian cities and found that we are the first Indian city to use this device,” he said.

The cardiologist said the implantation of the device requires no extra medical skills, but the pacemaker is more expensive.

“This device costs around Rs.250,000, which is about Rs 35,000 more than ordinary ones. But if we consider its advantages, then I am sure patients will prefer this device to ordinary ones,” Mishra said.

Moonlight 1.0 puts Silverlight on Linux

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Moonlight 1.0, an open source implementation of Microsoft’s Silverlight rich media application platform, was announced Wednesday for Unix and Linux systems, said Miguel de Icaza, the Novell developer who has been in charge of the project.

Moonlight is offered as a plugin that can be used in Firefox 2 and 3 on Unix systems using the X11 windowing system.

[ As Microsoft expands its RIA platform's reach, it is also seeing Silverlight adoption get hampered by the economic crisis. ]

“Moonlight 1.0 (and Silverlight 1.0) both come with a graphics pipeline, video and audio frameworks, and a Javascript bridge, and neither one of them contains an actual execution environment,” de Icaza, a Novell vice president, said in his blog. “The execution environment is the browser’s own Javascript engine. When developers build 1.0-based plugins they script all of the functionality using the browser’s own Javascript engine.”

Moonlight runs on both 32- and 64-bit systems. Moonlight 1.0, which was based on Silverlight 1.0, actually was released on January 20, for streaming of the Presidential inauguration.

Developers now are working on Moonlight 2.0, which will be compatible with Silverlight 2.0. “It’s a very nice upgrade over Silverlight 1.1,” offering easy development of GUI applications, de Icaza said in an interview on Wednesday.

A preview of Moonlight 2.0 is planned for release at the Mix09 conference in Las Vegas in mid-March. The general release is planned for the end of the year.

Also on the schedule for the Moonlight and Mono team is version 2.4 of Mono, an open source, cross-platform implementation of the Microsoft .Net development framework. Due in March, version 2.4 will feature a revamped ASP.Net stack that is many times faster than the current version, de Icaza said. ASP.Net is Microsoft’s technology for building Web sites.

RIM Releases Patch for Buggy ActiveX Control

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Research iIn Motion has patched a piece of software for Windows PCs that could leave them vulnerable to attack when loading new applications onto BlackBerry devices.

The flaw lies in an ActiveX control used to load third-party applications onto BlackBerrys connected to a PC via a USB cable. An ActiveX control is a small add-on program that works in a Web browser to facilitate the downloading of programs or security updates. However, the controls have been prone to vulnerabilities.

RIM said in an advisory that a vulnerability is introduced to a PC when someone runs the BlackBerry Application Web Loader Version 1.0 ActiveX control with any version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser. The advisory contains a link to the patch.

The vulnerability is an exploitable buffer overflow, which is a problem in memory that could allow an unauthorized program to run. RIM didn’t give details on how it might be exploited.

However, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) said an attacker could be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of a user by getting that user to view a specially-crafted HTML document. It could also cause Internet Explorer to crash, CERT wrote in an advisory.

The problem scores a 9.3 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), a way to evaluate the danger of a flaw. A score of 10 is considered the most dangerous, and anything above a seven is considered highly severe.

RIM advises that customers apply the patch. In its latest security updates on Tuesday, Microsoft also released a “kill bit” for the affected ActiveX control. A kill bit blocks an ActiveX control from running in Internet Explorer.

Know More About eChecks

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

An echeck is basically the online counterpart of the paper version of the checkbook.

An e check can only be initiated if and only if your bank account is linked to a Pay Pal account.

An e check is similar to the normal check as the funds are not transferred directly to your account but they are transferred after a period of three to four days.

Thus the e check acts like a normal check only that its working is through the internet.

EFT payments:

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is initiated when a computer based financial payment is made.

For example people who use credit cards, debit cards, bill payments, service payrolls etc that are made online and other such financial data transfers that are carried out using computer systems constitute EFT payments.

ACH processing:

Automated clearing house processing is basically an online hub for the transfer of financial data throughout the United States.

A lot of electronic financial data like credit card and debit card amounts are routed through the ACH which processes them in batches.

ACH transfers include credit card transfers and service payroll data. The debit transfers include consumer payments for insurance claims, mortgage loans and bill payments.

One in six Swedish children overweight: study

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

One in six Swedish five-year-olds is overweight, mainly due to lack of exercise, a study of 17,000 children showed Tuesday.

More than 17 percent of five-year-olds were heavier than they should be, with “12.9 percent overweight and 4.3 percent obese,” the report said.

The study, conducted by doctoral student Karina Huus at Linkoeping University, tracked babies born in southeastern Sweden between October 1997 and October 1999.

They were measured at birth, one year, two-and-a-half years, five years and eight to nine years of age. The parents also filled in questionnaires, including information about their children’s eating habits.

Low physical activity was associated with higher weights while certain foods, such as sugar-sweetened fruit drinks “may contribute to overweight/obesity at five years” of age while porridge may protect children at two-and-a-half years of age.

The report also showed that children whose parents were better educated, especially the father, had a lower chance of becoming fat.

In 2006, Sweden announced it would begin screening four-year-olds as part of their routine check-ups following a slew of reports showing an increased incidence of Sweden’s traditionally healthy children being overweight or obese.
