Rise above economic woes with the hover chair

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

A “Star Wars” inspired hover chair, a speedy electric motorbike and stereo speakers that cost as much as a small house are among the attractions at Britain’s biggest gadget show in London this weekend.

Organizers of Stuff Live hope thousands of visitors will forget their financial worries for a few hours and dream instead about the latest high tech toys.

Scores of exhibitors will show off everything from a pocket-sized DJ mixing desk, a solar-powered mobile phone charger and a “robot guitar” that uses tiny motors to tune its own strings.

Among the more unusual items on show is the British-designed Lounger, a chair that uses powerful magnets to float in the air.

Inventor Keith Dixon, of Sussex-based Hoverit Ltd, said he was inspired as a child by the anti-gravity Landspeeder vehicles in the “Star Wars” films.

“The sensation you feel as you lie back and close your eyes is totally different — like floating on a cloud,” said a Stuff Live spokesman. Its 6,000 pound ($9,620) price tag may bring visitors back down to earth with a bump, however.

For those after something less sedate, U.S. company Vectrix has a prototype of a high performance motorbike powered by an electric motor.

The sporty aluminum bike has a top speed of 125 mph, a range of 44 miles and costs nearly 40,000 pounds.

That’s cheap compared to another star attraction: a pair of limited edition curvy metal loudspeakers worth 70,000 pounds.

The Muon speakers, made by Kent-based company KEF, are well over six feet tall and have a thick shell of aluminum to minimize vibrations from the four-way speaker system.

KEF describes them as “a truly contemporary art form appropriate for 21st century living.”

Computer maker Asus will show off a laptop covered in laminated strips of fast-growing bamboo rather than plastic in an attempt to make it more environmentally sustainable.

Simon closes in on Masters, Nadal, Federer win

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

France’s Gilles Simon closed in on a place at the season-ending Masters Cup by beating Russian Igor Andreev 6-3 7-5 in the Paris Masters second round on Wednesday.

Simon, eighth in the ATP Race after reaching this month’s Madrid Masters final, will secure one of the three remaining tickets to Shanghai if his closest rivals do not reach the final at the Paris indoor event.

Spain’s world number one Rafael Nadal, Swiss second seed Roger Federer, world number four Andy Murray of Britain and sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, four of the five already in the Masters Cup, also reached the third round.

Top seed Nadal beat France’s Florent Serra 6-2 6-4, while Federer subdued Swede Robin Soderling 6-4 7-6.

Murray, who won the Madrid Masters and retained his St Petersburg Open title earlier this month, extended his winning streak to 13 with a clinical 6-2 6-4 win over American Sam Querrey.

Davydenko was made to sweat before he overcame big-serving Ljubicic 7-6 7-5.

The 10th-seeded Simon would have been wary of Andreev since the Russian had come within a point of winning their first-round clash at the Madrid Masters just two weeks ago.

But having squandered four match points in their last meeting, Andreev again allowed Simon to stage a comeback and set up a third-round showdown with seventh seed Andy Roddick.

Simon trailed 3-1 before benefitting from a string of unforced errors to win five games in a row and claim the opening set and rallied from 4-0 down in the second to snatch victory on his second match point.

“I knew that if I was able to pass that round today I would be in a good position to go to the Masters. That was my main goal,” Simon told reporters.

“As soon as I was able to go forward, I felt that I was a lot better than he was.

UNFORCED ERRORS

“I think it was very difficult for him when I was hitting my forehand to make winners. He’s not used to having the ball come back when he plays those forehands, so he can become very impatient and make many unforced errors with his forehand.”

Simon’s victory means Argentine David Nalbandian, who beat German Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 6-3, must retain his Paris title to book a trip to China.

He next faces compatriot and Davis Cup team mate Juan Martin Del Potro, who is seventh in the ATP Race and could lose and still book take one of the spots left up for grabs.

After an early exchange of breaks, Nalbandian and Kiefer held serve until the tiebreak which the eighth-seeded Argentine took 7-5 after 80 minutes after his opponent served a couple of double faults.

Nalbandian then broke in the second game of the second set to open a 3-0 lead, held serve and wrapped up the victory on his third match point.

“It’s going to be a tough one (against Del Potro). We both know each other very well. We are in the Davis Cup team so we practice a lot,” said Nalbandian, who beat Del Potro in the semi-final of the Swiss Indoors last weekend.

France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also kept his hopes of travelling to Shanghai alive when the number 13 seed claimed a 3-6 6-4 6-4 win over Czech Radek Stepanek.

The Australian Open finalist was at first surprised by Stepanek’s cunning shots but he finally outpowered his opponent to set up a third-round meeting with world number three Novak Djokovic, who beat him in Melbourne in January.

Spain’s David Ferrer, ninth in the ATP Race, and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, 12th, will not qualify for the Masters Cup after losing to German Philipp Kohlschreiber and Czech Tomas Berdych.

Kohlschreiber next takes on 11th seeded American James Blake, who still hopes to join the eight-man tournament after a 6-7 6-3 6-4 win over Italy’s Simone Bolelli.

Labeling is synonymous with organization, especially at workplace. However, one can use labels to organize the home as well. The most popular labels used for categorizing, cataloging, and organizing are addressing labels, identification labels, media labels, file folder labels, and shipping labels. The primary purpose of any label is identification, followed by classification. Avery labels help not only identify and classify but also systemize.

The media labels hold a special place in the management of any office space. Imagine shelves and shelves of CDs and DVDs without any identification. Media without labels are as good as books without their covers. It is important to label and organize office media properly. Professional media labels help do this job efficiently.

Thermal labels are a special type of labels that are created because of heat. There are two types of thermal labels: direct thermal labels and thermal transfer labels. The former ones do not require a ribbon to be printed while the latter ones require ribbons.

Labels are a great way to organize your workplace. Invest in high quality Avery labels for a great experience. Labels not only help you organize but also help add class to your home and business.

OPEC slashes oil output, triggering Western fury

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

OPEC said Friday it will slash oil output by 1.5 million barrels a day from November 1 as it seeks to shore up crude prices, triggering a verbal backlash from recession-threatened Britain and the United States.

The White House denounced what it called OPEC’s “anti-market” decision to cut production following the cartel’s emergency meeting in Vienna on Friday, even though oil prices subsequently slumped to 17-month lows on fears of a global recession.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was left “disappointed” by OPEC’s output reduction and urged oil producers to show a responsible attitude in the current crisis, his spokesman said.

Analysts had expected the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to cut its daily output by at least one million barrels per day as a global economic slowdown amid a worsening financial crisis reduces demand for energy.

Global stock markets plunged on Friday, with London losing more than nine percent as it struck a five-year low on news that Britain’s economy shrank in the third quarter, placing it perilously close to a recession.

OPEC, which produces 40 percent of world crude, announced a cut to production in a bid to support crude prices which “have witnessed a dramatic collapse — unprecedented in speed and magnitude,” according to an official statement from the cartel.

Yet after OPEC agreed to reduce its official output quota to 27.3 million barrels per day, the price of Brent North Sea crude sank close to 61 dollars, the lowest point since March 2007.

Crude futures in London and New York have plunged by almost 60 percent from record highs of above 147 dollars a barrel reached only three months ago when supply concerns sent prices soaring.

Crude oil is heading lower again… on fears that the (OPEC) cut might not be sufficient to compensate the shortfall of demand due to a global recession,” said Dresdner Kleinwort analyst Peter Fertig.

OPEC said in its statement published alongside its decision to cut production that “the financial crisis is already having a noticeable impact on the world economy, dampening the demand for energy, in general, and oil in particular.”

“Moreover, forecasts indicate that the fall in demand will deepen, despite the approach of winter in the northern hemisphere.”

However White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the United States desired “markets to be well supplied.”

She added: “The high oil prices from the past year contributed to the slowdown in demand and the subsequent downturn in the economy, and we would ask that everyone keep that in mind.”

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said in reference to OPEC’s cut: “It has always been our view that the value of commodities, including oil, should be determined in open, competitive markets, and not by these kinds of anti-market production decisions.”

In London, Prime Minister Brown’s spokesman said “OPEC needs to consider the impact that the decision will have on the world economy.”

He added it was important “that all decisions that are taken by the oil producers are designed to ensure there is long-term stability in the price of oil and transparency in pricing.”

Brown had angered OPEC nations ahead of the Vienna meeting by saying that a cut in production would be “scandalous.”

OPEC President Chakib Khelil on Friday insisted that the production cut would not hurt the global economy.

In Tehran the influential former president of Iran, OPEC’s second largest oil producer, called the world financial crisis a tsunami which has dragged down oil prices and caused a huge loss of revenue.

“This is the first wave of the tsunami to reach us. The oil price has fallen from 147 dollars a barrel to around 64 dollars. This is a huge loss” for Iran, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said in a Friday prayer sermon on state radio.

OPEC, which comprises 12 member countries, added that its latest output decision would be reviewed at its next meeting in Oran, Algeria, on December 17.

In the meantime the cartel said it “cannot be expected to bear alone the burden of restoring equilibrium” between oil supply and demand, calling on “non-OPEC producers/exporters to contribute to efforts to restore prices to reasonable levels and eliminate harmful and unnecessary fluctuations.”

If you want your employees to be able to make the most out of their email use, then you should look into some outlook 2003 training.

Outlook is a fairly simple program with a lot of room for elegant expansion. There are ways that emails can be sorted upon receipt. Emails from department heads could be filtered to a special box will all the emails from co-workers on a project would go to another. It’s just a basic principle of organization. The important thing is that they know this is an option. Otherwise, they are going to miss out on all of the other great features that it could offer.

There are also options for outlook 2007 training if you have already made the switch. You would then just have to decide whether to start from the beginning or focus on just what’s new in the 2007 suite. It’s your call in the end, but a little help might really improve your employees’ efficiency.

Sensex down to 28-month low of 9,771.70 pts

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex today slipped below the 10,000 level to close at over two-year low of 9,771.70 points on sustained selling by funds across counters. After opening lower by 500 points, the BSE barometer showed signs of recovery at mid-session before closing the day down by nearly 400 points.

The 30-share index finally ended the day at 28-month low of 9,771.70, a fall of 398.20 points or 3.92 per cent, while National Stock Exchange index Nifty also ended at 28-month low of 2,943.15, lower 122 points, or 3.98 per cent. Marketmen said fears of global economy falling into a recession and deepening credit crisis further weighed heavily on investors’ mind.

A free fall in global markets also cast a shadow on domestic bourses. Global indices fell by about 4-7 per cent.

Dow Jones Industrial Average overnight plunged over 500 points falling below the crucial 9,000 level, while Nikkei also closed lower by 4 per cent. The government this afternoon said the market regulator SEBI has disapproved the lending to offshore entities and has asked Foreign Institutional Investors to reverse short positions on borrowed shares.

The market bounced from its early lows and traded in the green for a brief period in late afternoon trade soon after the statement by Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Analysts noted that several monetary measures to inject liquidity in banking system and RBI’s latest decision to ease norms on overseas borrowing by corporates have failed to soothe fears.

Struggling Spurs lose in Italy, CSKA ease past Deportivo

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Udinese inflicted more misery on hapless Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-0 UEFA group stage victory on Thursday over the London side who contributed to their own downfall through poor goalkeeping and ill-discipline.

In-form Udinese’s victory increased the pressure on under-fire Spurs coach Juande Ramos, whose side prop up the Premier League and failed to finish with 11 men for the second successive match.

Udinese, second in Serie A, were gifted the chance to take the lead midway through the first half when Spurs’ keeper Heurelho Gomes failed to clear a backpass and then fouled Fabio Quagliarella to stop the Italian striker gaining possession.

Fellow Italian international Antonio Di Natale swept home the penalty. Spurs, who had two players sent off in their defeat by Stoke City at the weekend, were reduced to 10 men just before the hour when Jamie O’Hara was booked twice in a minute.

A swift break secured the Group D points for Udinese four minutes from time with Simone Pepe firing home from eight metres.

DZAGOYEV DOUBLE

CSKA Moscow’s talented teenage playmaker Alan Dzagoyev scored twice as the 2005 winners opened their Group H campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Deportivo Coruna.

Dzagoyev, who made his debut for Russia in a World Cup qualifier against Germany this month, struck twice in three first half minutes for CSKA, unbeaten in the Russian league since July 20. Brazilian Vagner Love added a third on the hour.

This is the last season at the helm for coach Valery Gazzaev, who led CSKA to their first European trophy when they beat Sporting in the 2005 final. He said in July that he would step down when the Russian season finishes at the end of November.

Bundesliga leaders Hamburg and German rivals Schalke 04 recorded opening group stage victories.

Hamburg won 2-1 in Slovakia against Zilina in Group F, while 1997 UEFA Cup winners Schalke 04 brushed aside Paris St Germain 3-1 in their Group A tie in Gelsenkirchen.

PSG defender Larrys Mabiala put through his own net after 12 minutes and Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi struck just before halftime. Halil Altintop made it 3-0 before Clement Chantome hit a stoppage time consolation.

In later matches on Wednesday, competition favourites AC Milan play at Heerenveen and twice winners Sevilla host VfB Stuttgart.

The top three from each of the eight groups progress to the first knockout round where they will be joined by the eight teams finishing third in their Champions League groups.

India gold futures fall on stronger dollar overseas

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

India’s gold futures were down on Wednesday, in step with foreign markets where gains in the dollar mainly against euro, deterred investors, analysts said.

“Euro weakness (against the dollar) and the plunging crude oil is putting a downward pressure on gold (globally),” said an analyst at Karvy Comtrade Ltd.

Gold has an inverse relation with the dollar as the two compete for funds, crude oil which drives inflation, shares a direct relation as the metal is used as an inflation hedge.

Foreign gold that guides the local market fell 1 percent, extending the previous day’s 3 percent decline when a rally in the dollar prompted long liquidation.

The benchmark December gold on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) is expected to find support at 12,000 rupees per 10 grams and resistance at 12,400 rupees, said Subodh Gupta, analyst at Anand Rathi Commodities.

December silver is likely to find support at 17,000 rupees per kg and resistance at 17,800 rupees, Gupta added.
